How the simple model works

The calculator applies the entered annual growth rate gradually across the selected number of months. It assumes compounding and does not account for step changes, seasonality or workload redesign.

Use the same unit for current demand and total capacity: terabytes, transactions per second, virtual CPUs, bandwidth or another consistent measure.

Include failure-state capacity

Normal capacity is not always the relevant limit. A cluster may need enough headroom to run after one node, zone, circuit or storage path is unavailable.

Run separate scenarios for normal operation, maintenance and expected component failure.

Set an action threshold

  • Identify procurement or deployment lead time
  • Define the utilization or latency trigger for investigation
  • Include known projects separately from trend growth
  • Record the owner and next review date
  • Recalculate after architecture or workload changes
